Michelson Prize
The Problem
Each year 6-8 million cats and dogs enter US shelters and 3-4 million animals are euthanized.
The Solution
A low cost, non-surgical method of cat and dog sterilization would allow non-profits, animal care centers, and NGOs to sterilize large populations of cats and dogs and reduce the number of homeless and unwanted animals that are killed each year in shelters.
Found Animals will award the $25 million Michelson Prize to the first entity to provide the Foundation with a product that has, at minimum, the following characteristics:
- Single dose, non-surgical sterilant
- Safe and effective in male and female, cats and dogs
- Suitable for administration in a field setting
- Viable pathway to regulatory approval
- Reasonable manufacturing process and cost

Michelson Grants
Funding is available through the Michelson Grants for research in pursuit of Prize goals. Proposed research is not required to generate results that meet all of the Prize criteria in order to be funded. However, strong preference will be given to projects with the potential to produce a Prize winning product or technology. Grant recipients will be eligible to make Prize claims in the event that their research generates a product or technology that meets all of the Prize criteria.
Animal Welfare Guidelines
All animal research performed in pursuit of the Michelson Prize in Reproductive Biology must conform to Found Animals' standards for humane treatment of animal subjects as defined in the Animal Welfare Guidelines.
